During an executive director transition, if an outgoing executive director is unable to stay in the position until a successor is found, an organization may choose to secure the services of a professional interim executive director. The primary responsibility of the interim director is to serve as the chief manager of the organization. The interim leader will typically be engaged in overseeing day-to-day operations, supervising staff, ensuring that fundraising activities stay on track and that the organization is meeting its obligations, as well as supporting the board in carrying out major transition activities.

This tool, taken from RoadMap and Strategies for Social Change’s Leadership Transition Toolkit, offers a sample job announcement that may be adapted for the needs of a variety of organizations seeking to hire an interim director.
